The wounds left from a dog attack aren’t always purely physical. Some children will develop psychological issues following an attack. For children who have suffered a moderate dog bite, 1 in 10 will develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The odds are greater for children who have suffered a severe dog bite injury. 1 in 4 of those victims will suffer PTSD.

PTSD can cause a child to exhibit abnormal behaviors. After a dog attack, your child may begin to:

  • Fear the dark
  • Fear being left alone
  • Refuse to go outside alone
  • Act shyly with family or friends
  • Act aggressively with family or friends
  • Lose interest in games, school, or other extracurricular activities

These symptoms may disappear on their own within six months to a year. However, it is always advisable to seek professional help if your child starts to exhibit PTSD symptoms. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy may help your child recover from the trauma they have experienced.
